What are unisex names?

A unisex name is a first name that is commonly given to both girls and boys, such as Jordan, Riley or Taylor. Many are old surnames or nature words that became first names over time.

The Unisex option mixes names that appear for both sexes in US records with a short list of well-known unisex names such as Charlie, River and Rowan. Some names lean one way in some years, so treat the list as a starting point and check how a name feels to you.

Where first names come from

Girl and boy names come from US Social Security Administration baby name records, covering births from 1960 to 2008, ordered from most to least common. That is why the Popular option gives familiar names and the Unique option reaches deep into the list for rare ones.

This tool gives first names only. If you want a first and last name together, use the random name generator or the American name generator.

Tips for choosing a first name

  • Say it with the last name. A first name should sound good next to the family name. Read the full name out loud before you decide.
  • Think about nicknames. Elizabeth can be Liz, Beth or Ellie. Check that you like the shorter versions too.
  • Check the initials. Make sure the first, middle and last initials do not spell something unwanted.
  • Mind the length. Short names are easy to write and spell. Long names give you more nickname options.
  • Match the era. Names rise and fall over the decades, so pick one that fits when your character or person was born.
  • Say it out loud. If it feels natural to say, it will feel natural to read.
