Professional email formats
For work, school and job applications, a plain version of your real name is almost always the best choice. If your first choice is taken, try the next pattern.
| Pattern | Example | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| first.last | emma.carter | Most jobs, resumes and school |
| flast | ecarter | A short, formal address |
| first.l | emma.c | When first.last is already taken |
| last.first | carter.emma | A clean alternative |
| first.last.studio | emma.carter.studio | Freelancers and small businesses |
Gmail username rules in short
A Gmail username is 6 to 30 characters long and can use letters, numbers and periods. Underscores, dashes, apostrophes and most other symbols are not allowed, and a period cannot be the first or last character or appear twice in a row. By default, every name this tool makes fits these rules.
Gmail also ignores periods, so emma.carter and emmacarter reach the same inbox. That means adding or moving dots will not give you a new address. If emmacarter is taken, change the name itself, for example with a middle initial or a short word.
Other email providers have their own rules, so check the sign-up page of the one you choose.
Tips for choosing an email name
- Use your real name for anything professional. Recruiters and clients trust it.
- Avoid birth years and long strings of numbers. They look dated and give away personal details.
- Skip nicknames and jokes in work emails. Keep those for a separate personal address.
- Short and easy to spell wins. Say it out loud on the phone to test it.
- Use the same name style across your email, LinkedIn and portfolio.
- For a business, a custom domain such as you@yourcompany.com looks more established than a free address.
Email name generator FAQ
Is the email name generator free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many names you generate.
Does this create an email account?
No. It only suggests the part before the @. You still need to sign up with an email provider, and the generator cannot tell whether a name is already taken. Try a few options when you register.
What is a good professional email name?
Your first and last name, such as emma.carter, or a short version such as ecarter or emma.c. Avoid nicknames, numbers and birth years.
Do dots matter in a Gmail address?
No. Gmail ignores periods, so emma.carter and emmacarter are the same address. Other providers may treat them as different, and work or school accounts can too.
Can I use an underscore in a Gmail address?
No. Gmail allows letters, numbers and periods only. The underscore format in this tool is for providers that allow it, so leave it on Any if you want a Gmail-safe name.
Is my name saved or sent anywhere?
No. Names are generated in your browser, and what you type is not sent to a server.
