How the city names are made
Each name is built from word parts that fit the setting. Fantasy and sci-fi names join a short start and an ending, such as Eld and oria. Medieval and modern names join place words, such as Ash and ford or Maple and wood. Two-word names add a place word like Haven, Hollow or Falls, and “City of” names add an opener such as City, Town or Citadel.
All names are invented. The modern US-style names sound like American towns, but they are not taken from a list of real places, so a match with a real city is a coincidence.
Tips for naming a city
- Match the culture. Names built from similar sounds feel like they come from one people. Stay in one setting for a region, and change the setting for a far-away land.
- Say what the place is known for. Names like Stonebridge, Silver Haven or Ironbury hint at a river crossing, a harbor or a mining town.
- Keep it easy to read. Players and readers will see the name many times, so short names of two or three syllables work best.
- Avoid look-alike names. On one map, avoid several names that start with the same letters, so readers do not mix them up.
- Mix the shapes. Use a few one-word names, a few two-word names and one grand “City of” name for the capital.
- Say it out loud. If the name is easy to say, it will be easy to remember.

Frequently asked questions
Is the city name generator free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up and nothing to install. Names are created in your browser.
Are these real cities?
No. The names are invented from word parts. The Modern US-style names sound like American towns, but a match with a real place is only a coincidence.
Can I use these names in my story, game or map?
Yes. They are free to use in stories, games, maps and tabletop campaigns. If you plan to publish a game or a book, do a quick web search to make sure a name is not already used for something else.
Can I choose the first letter?
Yes. Type a letter in the Starting letter box and the names will start with it whenever enough names match. For “City of” names, the letter applies to the name after “of”.
Can I get town, village or kingdom names?
Yes. The names work for any kind of settlement. Try the two-word shape for names like Silver Haven or Black Hollow, which suit towns and villages well.
Can I generate real city names?
Not at the moment. This tool creates made-up names for fiction, games and maps. For real places, use a map or a list of cities for the country you need.
