How American names are written
A typical American full name has a first name, an optional middle name and a last name, such as John Michael Smith. On forms and documents the middle name is often shortened to an initial, for example John M. Smith. The middle initial option follows that style.
The United States is diverse, so the last names on the list come from many backgrounds, such as Smith, Garcia and Nguyen. That makes the results feel like a real American phone book rather than one single heritage.
Where the names come from
First names come from the US Social Security Administration baby name records, covering births from 1960 to 2008. Last names come from the 2010 US Census list of common surnames. Both are public-domain US government data, so every name is real and common.
The generator combines a first name and a last name at random. It does not pick real people, so any match with a real person is a coincidence.
Tips for choosing an American name
- Match the era. Names rise and fall over the decades. Names like Jennifer and Michael suit people born in the 1970s, while newer names suit younger characters.
- Balance the rhythm. Pair a long first name with a short last name, or the other way round, so the full name flows.
- Avoid famous names. If a result matches a well-known actor or athlete, generate again so readers are not distracted.
- Vary the first letters. In a cast of characters, avoid several names that start with the same letter.
- Use an initial for realism. A middle initial makes a name look like it came from a form, a contract or a school record.
- Say it out loud. If the full name feels natural to say, it will feel natural to read.

Can I get male or female names only?
Yes. Choose Female full name or Male full name in the Name type menu. Choose Full name, any gender to mix both.
Can I get a name with a middle initial?
Yes. Choose Full name + middle initial in the Name type menu to get names like Emily R. Carter.
Can I choose the first letter?
Yes. Type a letter in the Starting letter box and the first names will start with it whenever enough names match. Last names stay common and realistic.
Can I use these names in my story, game or app?
Yes. They are free to use in stories, games, designs and test data. They are random combinations, so use your own legal name for anything official.
