Which genre should you choose?
| Genre | Best for |
|---|---|
| Fantasy | Novels, D&D and tabletop campaigns, fantasy games. Names like Aelwen Stormhollow sound invented but are easy to say. |
| Modern | Contemporary fiction, screenplays, school stories and everyday roleplay. Realistic first names with common surnames. |
| Sci-fi | Space operas, cyberpunk and dystopian stories. Short first names with surnames from around the world, sometimes with a rank. |
| Medieval | Historical fiction, knights, castles and low-fantasy worlds. Names that fit an old-world setting without magic. |
| Villain | Antagonists, dark lords and rivals. Sharp, dramatic names, often with a title like Lady or Count. |
| Hero | Protagonists and champions. Strong, bright names that sound trustworthy and brave. |
Tips for naming a character
- Match the world. A name should fit the setting. Short, hard sounds suit warriors and sci-fi crews, while soft sounds suit healers and nobles.
- Keep it easy to read. If readers cannot pronounce a name, they will stumble every time it appears. Try saying it out loud.
- Avoid similar names. Two characters named Kael and Kira in the same scene are easy to mix up. Vary the first letter and the length.
- Use the surname to add meaning. A name like Stormhollow or Brightshield tells readers something about a family or a place.
- Check for existing characters. Search the name before you commit, so you do not accidentally copy a famous character.
- Let it fit the role. A villain called Sunny Meadows might be a great twist, but only if you do it on purpose.
Where to use character names

| Video games and mods | Name player characters, bosses and quest givers. Sci-fi and Hero work well for games. |
| Screenplays and comics | Find believable modern names or bold hero and villain names for the page. |
| Roleplay and online worlds | Build a new persona or OC in seconds, then save the best ones with the heart. |

Frequently asked questions
Is the character name generator free?
Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many names you generate.
How do I generate a fantasy character name?
Select Fantasy in the genre chips, choose male, female or any, and press Generate. Add a starting letter if you want names that begin with it, then use Generate more for new ideas.
Can I choose the first letter of the name?
Yes. Type a letter in the Starting letter box and the first names will start with it whenever possible.
Can I use these names in my book or game?
You can use them for your own stories, games and campaigns. Names themselves are generally not protected, but it is smart to search a name first so you do not copy a well-known character or a trademarked name.
Are the names random?
Yes. Each name is built from lists of first names, surnames and name parts in the genre you pick, so you get a different mix every time.
How do I save the names I like?
Tap the heart on a name to add it to your kept list below the results. The list stays in your browser, so it is still there when you come back.
