Generate 1,000 random names

Need a long list? Set How many to 1,000, press Generate Names, then use Copy all to paste the list anywhere or Download .txt to save it as a file. Each list has no repeated names, and you can press Generate more for another 1,000.

Where the names come from

The names are not made up from syllables. First names come from US Social Security Administration baby-name records, using names given between 1960 and 2008, and last names come from the 2010 US Census list of the most common surnames. Common names appear more often, but rare ones show up too, so a list of 100 names feels like a real group of people.

Names are combined at random in your browser. That means every full name is a made-up person, and any match with a real person is a coincidence. Nothing you choose is sent to our server.

Tips for using random names

  • Match the setting. A story set in the US South and one set in New York use different names. Generate a bigger list and pick the ones that fit.
  • Mix the pool. Use first names from one batch and last names from another to make unusual pairs.
  • Say it out loud. If you are naming a character, read the name aloud. Names that are hard to say rarely stick with readers.
  • Avoid look-alikes. Two characters named Emily and Emma on the same page confuse readers. Change one of them.
  • Keep it fictional. Random names are for stories, tests and games. Do not use them to pretend to be a real person.

Frequently asked questions

Is the random name generator free?

Yes. It is 100% free, with no sign-up and no limit on how many names you generate.

Can I generate 1,000 random names?

Yes. Choose 1,000 in the How many menu and press Generate Names. Use Copy all or Download .txt to save the list.

Are these names real people?

No. Each name is a random mix of a common first name and a common last name, so any match with a real person is a coincidence.

Yes. Use the Gender menu to choose Female or Male. Any gives you a mix of both.

Can I get only last names or only first names?

Yes. Pick First names only or Last names only from the Name type menu.

Where do the names come from?

First names come from US Social Security baby-name records (1960 to 2008) and last names from the 2010 US Census list of common surnames.

Do you save the names I generate?

No. Names are generated in your browser and nothing is sent to our server.
